A: For FULL PACKAGE clients, after you are onboarded, you’ll set a day each week you want your weekly lesson to drop. On that day, we’ll release the next lesson in the series. Students will complete the lessons either online, in class, or BOTH (this is PERFECT for hybrid schedules) and at the end of each week, you’ll receive a grade report and a progress report to use as you see fit!
For BASIC PACKAGE clients, you’ll get instant access to all the lessons to manage the content yourself. Those who wish students not to progress too quickly should HIGHLY consider the FULL PACKAGE for full support and a custom scheduling of lesson drops!
Q: What if I’m hybrid?
A: Our BASIC package may be perfect. You can use the videos by projecting them in your classroom and sharing your screen to your virtual cadets on your normal distance-learning platform. Then, you’ll be able to assess participation as you normally would since the learning is synchronous!
Q: What platform does this use? Is it online? On a DVD? Does this integrate with Canvas/Blackboard/Google Classroom/etc.? Do you download the material? How is this curriculum delivered?
A: We host the curriculum inside Thinkific, a highly reviewed and rated online course platform. Each cadet and instructor will be enrolled with their school email address and the platform is 100% web-based without the need to download special apps or materials. We do, however, encourage you to post the link to the course as well as you intended outcomes to your existing online platforms, though!
Q: Will this curriculum be aimed at my specific service manual?
A: Yes! While the curriculum is for ALL services, after nearly a decade of doing multi-service drill workshops as well as having coached significantly with units of all services, we have gotten pretty adept at teaching all service manuals congruently. All your kiddos will need to do is listen for THEIR service manual information!
Q: Are these lessons correlated to state and national standards?
A: Currently, our curriculum has been mapped to Texas Essential Skills & Knowledge (TEKS) standards as well the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS) standards for dance and physical education. FULL PACKAGE subscribers can have their state standards mapped to these lessons at no additional charge!
Q: What do you provide the instructors?
A: Programs who purchase the FULL package receive weekly progress reports and weekly grade reports in addition to on-demand support to enroll/change students as required. You will also receive a lesson guide for each week for those of you who are also facilitating on-site instruction. These guides should help you meet campus/district lesson plan reporting as well as provide insight into how you, as the instructor, can round out the curriculum with your knowledge and experience!
Q: How do you assess student learning outcomes?
A: While we initially explored the idea of cadet video submissions, we immediately considered issues of access and equity. As such, in our FULL PACKAGE, the assessments are designed to test students on specific kinesthetic concepts while also asking them to synthesize the information presented and apply it. Drill period is not designed to be a course cadets fail outright nor is it designed to be a “gotcha” but our assessments are suitably rigorous and designed to be the best available for such an application!
Q: What if a student misses a week due to illness or extenuating circumstances?
A: While we will add each lesson on a weekly basis on YOUR schedule, we will not REMOVE lessons from the online platform. This will allow each student to make up previous lessons. If you can let us know who this applies to, we can screen special make-up progress reports as needed!
Q: How many times a week/what class length is this curriculum designed for?
A: We have designed this curriculum to be used once a week for a standard 50 minute class period. You can absolutely differentiate as necessary for block scheduling by including additional practice time either at home or face to face or, as is most likely, double-dip any other coursework that may be required of your cadets if you are on a 90-minute-block period.
Q: Do you accept POs/can you become a vendor?
A: Yes, absolutely. Please let us know and we’ll work with your bookkeeper to hop on the vendor list for your district or campus!
Q: How are programs funding this purchase?
A: While some are using booster club or unit-level funding, by correlating the curriculum to educational standards and using the same guided methodology I used as a classroom teacher, we are hoping that programs see the opportunity to fund this from the campus or district level and that campus administrators see the value in a non-traditional subject being taught to state standards! “Do it! As a prior Military Training Instructor that taught drill, the visual breakdown and verbiage your D&C 101 videos provide is invaluable in an asynchronous environment. I did not have the technical tools just using Zoom to be able provide an effective physical demonstration to my class, this filled in that important element. Most students are visual learners, this allows that. I teach the first year cadets every Tuesday. Our focus with drill is to get the flights proficient with what we call the 30 step sequence. In those 30 steps in includes all basic drill movements, both stationary and marching. Our unit was selected to put together a training/demonstration video that was approved and disseminated to all AFJROTC units in the country and DOD schools. So I use that video in conjunction with your D&C 101 videos to give the new cadets a visual on what the drill movements look like and how it all ties together into our 30 step sequence. I break it down into very small classes as not to overwhelm the cadets with a lot of information. I also provide them a work/note sheet that corresponds the material with where they can find it in the AFMAN so they can cross reference and have another information source. The frustrating part of teaching and learning drill in a virtual setting is that absence of physical follow up to make corrections on mechanics. I have to rely on the cadets practicing on their own. They have been told up front that when they come back next year, hopefully to a normal setting, we will spend ample time to physically put all of what we are taught this year into practice. This year is for them to understand the concepts and practical purpose of each drill movement and how ties into the flight performing as a team to complete the 30 steps. I also give quizzes to check understanding of each drill movement…Do it! As a prior Military Training Instructor that taught drill, the visual breakdown and verbiage your D&C 101 videos provide is invaluable in an asynchronous environment.
